Three Ways is a remarkable school and we are very proud that this has been recognised by OFSTED   who rated us as Outstanding in every category in their recent assessment. This is testament to the dedication and skill of the whole school community who work so hard to provide an excellent learning environment for our students.

As Governors, we are responsible for all aspects of the running of the school, but above all, we have a duty of care for our students and to provide a safe and enjoyable learning environment. We will endeavour to ensure that Three Ways remains a place to which parents wish to send their children and a place in which staff can enjoy teaching and aspire to achieve their personal and career goals.

The school is an increasingly popular choice for parents and this in itself presents challenges for the future, as governors we will continue to work with the senior management of the school to review how best to meet the future demands on the school and on its resources.

This year will see an exciting new development with the opening of the much awaited Work Skills Centre. This facility is nearing completion and will be a key addition to the school, offering students the chance to gain real work experience and training within a fully functioning café which serves both the school and the local community.

Research & Collaborations

In order to stay at the cutting edge of practice, our school has always embraced opportunities to engage with internal and external research projects.

We are committed to developing innovative approaches that place pupils at the centre of our research and draw on the expertise of our in-house practitioners and partners from the academic community.  Since its inception, Three Ways School has established strong working relationships with Universities and Colleges and firmly believes in disseminating as well as developing our knowledge base through student partnership and placement schemes.

At present, forthcoming projects include PHD research into outdoor learning approaches for pupils on the Autistic Spectrum, Doctoral research into the ‘Orchestra Project’, explorative programming and electronics workshops based on the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths) curriculum, Masters level research into ‘Food and Attachment’, a collaborative project into the use of electronic textiles and a pilot project investigating mindfulness and stress regulation through bio-feedback data.

Family Support is offered in a range of ways at Three Ways School. You can contact your child's class teacher or the Head of Department, who will be able to support and signpost you.

Some examples of what support is available:

Signposting to agencies for support with funding for equipment, holidays, short breaks
Promoting the Three Ways Friendship Network. This is a friendly group of parents/carers who have regular coffee mornings and meet ups for them and their children to make new friends. Everyone is welcome. To join you can email ; threewaysfriendshipnetwork@outlook.com or pick up a form at the school reception for more information. There is a Facebook page which you can join by invitation. Email to request to join.
Referrals and signposting to other services. We  have a bank of information about what services are out there in BANES as well as other local authorities.
Passing on up to date information about out of school activities, play schemes 
Attending meetings/visits to other schools, respite providers, organisations etc with you if you need some support.
Support with letters and communicating to housing department if you are struggling with overcrowding or other housing issues.
Home visits can be arranged if coming into the school is a barrier.
Home Thrive assessments to look at your child’s emotional/social development and to help you understand your child’s behaviour, giving you strategies and activities to help your child move through difficult behaviour. These will be led by Mrs Lucy Knibb, Assistant Head or Sharon Conway, THRIVE lead Teaching Assistant. 
Emotional support for parents/carers if you need a chat over the phone or in person.
Referral to specialist services such as Learning Disability nursing team to address issues at home such as sleep, toileting and behaviour.
Coordinating Team Around the child meetings bringing all people involved in supporting a child together to discuss the child’s needs and put in place a plan of support.

BAPP is a local voluntary organisation and Registered Charity. We promote and facilitate opportunities for children and young people to play and participate in positive activities. BAPP recognises and promotes the importance of self-directed play in relation to child development and the rights of children and young people. BAPP runs holiday  play schemes, play days and family play sessions in the Bath area.

Combe Down Holiday Trust
Combe Down Holiday Trust is a local charity, providing holidays, short breaks, or days out for disabled people and/or their carers and families living in the Bath & North East Somerset area.
The Trust’s aim is to support disabled people, both those with permanent disabilities and those disabled through illness – such as cancer – enabling them, their families and/or carers to have a short break, holiday or respite care or to have a day out. The offer of a holiday provides an enhanced quality to a life that may have lacked such an experience.

Crossroads
Crossroads provide practical support to give carers a much needed break from their caring role.  Crossroads can give you regular planned breaks of a few hours each week during the day, evening or weekend.  Providing home based respite, a trained paid Carer Support Worker will come to your home and take over your caring duties, giving you an essential break.

Direct Payments
If you are a parent of a disabled child under the age of 18 and you and your family have been assessed by Bath and North East Somerset social services as needing a service, you could receive payments to arrange and purchase your own support.
Examples may include: personal assistance in daily living, day services, short term breaks (respite) and live-in-care.
To take part in the scheme you should have your needs assessed by a social worker.  To ask for an assessment please contact the disabled Children’s team: 01225 825307.

SWALLOW Ltd
SWALLOW is a user led registered charity supporting people with learning disabilities, responding to individuals’ needs by providing flexible support. This could include;
Supported housing. Swallow currently have ten supported living places in two locations in Midsomer Norton.
Outreach – SWALLOW offer one to one support in people’s homes. This support can be to help individuals to access the community or to provide whatever support they require.
Training for independence – At their training house, Base House, members  can stay over night and learn life skills such as cleaning, cooking, shopping etc with support from SWALLOW staff.
Activities. SWALLOW iffers a range of day activities to allow creativity and expression such as art, drama, as well as teaching skills such as cookery and life skills.

Hop, Skip and Jump – Kingswood.
This is a play and support centre for children with special needs. They have two fully-equipped sensory rooms, a games room and a music room. They  have extensive outside space, with a sports court, adventure play equipment and a selection of castles and forts!

Hillcroft
Hillcroft was established in 1920 as a charity and college for women who have had little opportunity to improve their education. Since then thousands of women have successfully moved their lives forward as a result, many going on to university and good employment.
New Beginnings is part of Hillcroft’s Big Lottery outreach programme and is held in various regions during the year. The programme is available for all women 19 and over and has been specially devised to help women discover their potential, give them insight into their current skill level and help them to map a pathway to betterment in employment, confidence and higher educaiton.
New Beginnings is also a springboard to Hillcroft’s residential courses and other opportunities.

The Rainbow Resource
Rainbow resource card – you can get this from the Family Information Service – call 08000731214 or 07980988906.
This card provides evidence that you are a carer and showing it can get you in free to many different places when going as a carer with your child. Places include cinema, National Trust sites, swimming etc etc.
Rainbow resource is Bath and North East Somerset’s Guide for children with additional needs. The website has an excellent range of local and national voluntary sector services that can enrich the lives and experiences of children and young people.

Parents Carers Aiming High
Parents Carers Aiming High is a group of parents whose children are all under 25 and have a range of special needs; from medical to physical conditions and from behavioral to learning disabilities.
United by their common goal, these parents are all working to improve services for disabled children and their families in Bath and North East Somerset.
PCHA has an active steering committee with parents taking on roles as Parent Representatives on strategic boards and in focus groups. The group is supported by the Carers’ Centre Bath and North East Somerset.
Parents can get involved in PCAH by coming along to an event or activity, dropping into a parents’ support group or attending group meetings. Alternatively parents can simply telephone the Carer’s Centre or e-mail their views through Centre’s website.

Three Ways Radio

We are looking to build upon our early successes in experimenting with radio broadcasts last year and broaden our target audience school-wide and beyond through pod casts on our school Website.  

Josh Walford - our onsite technical mastermind, has put together a portable radio recording suite to offer our students the opportunity to develop their own live show.

The radio station will begin as a lunch time club this year and look to become a fully functioning after school club into the next academic year.  As part of the show we will be inviting musical requests, sharing news from the school community, updating pupils and parents on exciting activities in school and beyond and offering a range of exciting competitions and features for pupils, parents and staff to enjoy.

Work Experience

At Three Ways School we take a personalised approach to work experience. Within the Key Stage 4 department and the Sixth Form we explore a wide range of internal and external placements.  Many of our pupils build their confidence working with our school Site Manager, supporting Primary classes and exploring local work experience by taking part in supported work place visits. Work experience has proven to be a great addition to the growth of the pupil’s self-esteem, confidence and maturity.

As a school we feel it is essential to give the pupils the best opportunities to succeed in employment or voluntary work when they leave Three Ways. In a work environment pupils are involved in a different set of skills and challenges and build a range of practical and communication strategies.

We have had many successful placements in and around Bath thanks to the continued support of local employers such as Curo, St Martins Garden Primary School, BANES parks department, Bath Opportunity Pre-School , Tom Baker Cricket and Bath Rugby.

Creative Schools

Welcome to Three Ways Creative Schools. Within this section of the website you will have the opportunity to explore some of the fantastic creative projects and partnerships that take place between Three Ways and our wider community. These range from small scale class based projects to collaborations with artists and professional practitioners, theatres, orchestras, universities and research centres.  Each project covers an area of creative arts including visual art, music, dance and drama or a combination of these disciplines.

Sensory Occupational Therapy

Without even thinking about it, we are all processing huge quantities of information: from our clothes touching our skin, our muscles and joints telling us where are arms and legs are, our sense of balance telling us if we are upright, upside down, or leaning over.  Our eyes, ears and noses are constantly receiving messages and send them to our brains to interpret.  Our brains filter all this information without us even knowing about, tuning out the bits we don't need and tuning into the bits we do.  This allows us to get on with everyday life activities such as: noticing and adjusting how our body is moving so we can complete a novel physical activity, listening to a news report in a busy environment, or reading a newspaper when we are on a bus.

As adults we all experience 'hiccups' in our sensory processing and we feel overwhelmed.  Imagine sitting in a traffic queue on a hot day, the radio is on, your clothes begin to feel uncomfortable, you feel restless, the children start arguing in the back seat, your mouth feels dry, the smell of petrol fumes becomes overwhelming and you end up shouting and banging your hands on the steering wheel.  This is sensory overload and for a brief period you could not unconsciously tune out of unwanted sensory information. 

We are not born with the ability to interpret our senses.  Our brain develops this ability through engaging with everyday sensory events, particularly in childhood.  Infants and young children have to learn to interpret their senses to recognise their parents face, voice and smell.  Through being cared for, and later on through play, their senses are stimulated and they begin to develop their ability to plan movements and tune in and out of sensory information.  

Children with learning difficulties can struggle to make sense of the information coming in from their senses due to too much or too little sensory information getting through to their conscious awareness.  They may be sensory avioders or sensory seekers, or just not know when they have had enough and get really upset.  Children can struggle to interpret similarities and differences in their senses or they may have difficulty with recognising the information from their muscles and joints, and sense of balance that is needed to plan movements. 

Children's Occupational Therapists can use a sensory approach to understand the underlying reasons that a child is experiencing difficulties in engaging with everyday activities and use sensory strategies to address them. 

Sensory Occupational Therapy at Three Ways School 
Isabel Ball is in school on Tuesdays.  She works closely with the teaching, therapy and curriculum access teams to ensure that our children feel regulated, happy, comfortable in themselves, and can enjoy their school life.  This can involve: short blocks of individual therapy to evaluate a child's sensory processing difficulties; divising individualised programmes for children to support them felling regulated and progress with developing their physical skills; liaising with the teaching team to adjust and adapt classroom environments and routines.  Isabel also works with small groups of children to address sensory processing difficulties and physical skill development.

We’re delighted to announce the Workskills Café is now complete. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that has supported this project and given money and time to help us realise the dream of making sure pupils have the skills and opportunity to enter the workplace.

The Workskills Centre is also providing a much-needed community hub, offering a meeting space that is suitable for many types of meeting, internet access and community services.

Jax the Dog

Hello, my name is Jax and I am the new Three Ways School puppy!

I absolutely love coming to school. I get to do loads of cool stuff like go for walks with the pupils from all around the school. I spend time with individual pupils who need to talk or chill and sometimes pupils read stories to me, which is very relaxing.

I love food and will eat anything!  Everyone is very kind to me at Three Ways. They usually remember not to shout or bang when I am around and I get treats – How about that for a great life.

I am always in and around school, but if you want to say hello, you will usually find me having fun in class in Sixth Form!  

 

Everyone has been loving playing with Jax as the weather is warming up and Jax' timetable has become almost fully booked! In the last two terms Jax has been loving spending more time outside encouraging the pupils to exercise out and about, going for walks, playing fetch and chase. Jax loves to help our young people move around and will play different games depending on different pupil's needs.
Jax has continued to go out on trips and loved visiting the park and cafés - the pupil's were brilliant, helping to command Jax and practicing their communication skills to make sure he listened and responded while out.
Jax has also been supporting our Thrive groups, joining them for 1:1 and group sessions and is very much enjoying being a pat dog and having lots of strokes and cuddles.
Jax has particularly enjoyed working all over the school in the last few terms and now visits classes from Early Years right through to 6th form. Pupil's love to both come and visit Jax and welcome him to their classroom

SHOUT OUT!

Sometimes young people face situations in their lives and they don’t know who they can turn to.
Sometimes it can be hard to turn to those who know so much about you already.
Shout Out! is an independent service run by Off the Record that helps young people to express their wishes and feelings, in whatever way that
might be possible. If there is something they want to say, or something they want to START, STOP or CHANGE, then we can support them in doing that.
We can’t promise to make everything better in an instant but we CAN make sure that everything is tried and that the young person is listened to

Shout Out! is providing a drop-in service in Three Ways School that will run each week. To see an Advocate young people can ask their teacher or put their name on a slip and put it in the Shout Out! box in reception.

The past three years have seen a number of exciting and hugely beneficial developments at the School.

We are now established as an Academy School and this has brought added flexibility in how the Senior Management Team and the Board of Governors are able to plan for the future and set our own priorities. Any further changes that are deemed to be desirable will only be made after full consultation with all concerned.  They must also be directly linked to the School Improvement Plan and be for economic, technical or organisational reasons.  The primary motivation will always be the best interests of the children in our care.

In the spring of this year we conducted an opinion survey amongst all staff at Three Ways.  This proved to be a very valuable exercise and a number of changes have been made as a direct result.  However, the over-riding view of staff was that the School is a caring and welcoming place to work and that they have a sense of pride in what they do.  There are good relationships throughout the School community which bodes well for the future.

At the end of the last school year, OFSTED gave us it’s ‘seal of approval’ by reporting that the School was ‘outstanding’ in every single category.  This was entirely due to the hard work and dedication of the whole school community and has given us the confidence to move forward to achieve even more success in the future.

After nearly three years of planning, work is about to start on the development of the Work Skills Centre.  This will provide students with the facilities to learn important life skills as well as becoming a focal point for other school and community activities.

As Governors, we are responsible for all aspects of the running of the school, but above all, we have a duty of care for the children at the school and to provide a safe and enjoyable learning environment whilst they are with us.  We will endeavour to ensure that Three Ways remains a place to which parents wish to send their children, a place in which staff can enjoy teaching and aspire to achieve their personal and career goals, as well as a school that is at the heart of the community that it serves.  The happy atmosphere within the school conveys itself to all who visit us – a high accolade indeed.

Three Ways is blessed with a dedicated and skilled group of governors.  However, we are always looking for new volunteers and in the very near future new governors will be appointed from within the teaching staff, non-teaching staff, parents and the community.  I have every confidence that we will continue to flourish and that the school will continue to be able to offer the very best for our children, our parents, our staff and the wider community.

Shout Out! Off the Record’s children's Rights and Advocacy Service.
Advocacy for children and young people with disabilities.
Shout out! is a free and independent service run by Off the Record. We are not part of social services, school or health services. We put the voice of children and young people first and help them to express their thoughts, wishes and feelings, in whatever way that might be possible.  If there is something they want to say, or something they want to start, stop or change, then we can support them.
We can make sure that children and young people are listened to, feel empowered and involved in decisions about their lives.
Young people have used the service to give their views about: changing schools, friendships, respite care, individual support, being independent, further education and jobs, buddying, PA’s and transport issues as well as other things.
Every child and young person can express their views so we also offer non-instructed advocacy for those who don’t use traditional forms of communication such as speech, symbols or signing. If you would like to know more please get in touch.

Shout Out! now also offers support to young people with SEND for their year 11 transition reviews. The Advocate can help with options and choices for the future looking at education/employment/training, independent living, good health and community participation or anything else that’s important to them for their future.

School Clubs

Welcome to the new After 3 Club!!

After 3 Club will run on

Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s 3.20pm – 4.20pm

After 3 will be operated by our experienced school staff who know your children very well and can adapt any activity to ensure inclusion. 

Activities during the clubs will include a range of creative experiences, sport activities, outdoor learning, sensory chillax, music & movement and many more.  These will be planned to meet the needs of each pupil.

The clubs rely on staff giving their time and clubs will only be run if we are able to cover costs with pupil take up.  Therefore, payments will need to be made in full before the start of the clubs to secure a place.

The booking form and permission form at the back of this leaflet, should be filled in and returned to the school office. You will receive written confirmation with details of the days your child has joined and be asked for payment at that time.  Confirmation will be sent as soon as we can guarantee the club will be running. 

Clubs this term will start the week of 24th September.

Clubs for Term 2 will start the week of 5th November 2018.

Clubs will run for 5 weeks in Term 1 and 6 weeks in Term 2 with the last club of term 2 on Thursday 13th December.     

No clubs will be running on a Tuesday or Friday evening to enable time for Staff training and development.

The School Nurses are employed by Virgin Care and work with Three Ways School. They work in partnership with hospital doctors and other health professionals.
 

The school nursing service offers:

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is provided and managed by NHS.
The chartered physiotherapist is responsible for the assessment of pupils. If appropriate a programme will be developed that can be implemented throughout the school day and at home in consultation with everyone involved. Programmes are designed to improve the physical abilities, independent mobility and functional independence of pupils. The therapists and assistants main areas of work include:
 

•Providing physiotherapy treatments by involvement with pupils individually, in small groups or class groups.
•Seating and other specific equipment needs are assessed and monitored and changes made as necessary. The occupational therapist is involved with wheelchair provision in conjunction with the physiotherapist as appropriate.
•Advice is given on moving, handling and positioning of children, with particular regard to enabling pupils to have the best possible access to learning experiences.

Transport is arranged where necessary for pupils attending the school.  Transport is arranged by the Local Authority.  Whilst the school is happy to help with concerns that parents may have regarding transport, the responsibility rests with the L.E.A.  It is your responsibility to inform School Transport if they are not needed or of any changes.

There are 5 days during the school year when the school closes to have Teacher Development Days.  You will be informed of these as soon as possible.

We believe that school and home partnership is very important and we are always trying to find new ways of doing so.  Here are some of them:
TELEPHONE: You are welcome to contact the school at any time but if you need to speak to a teacher please ring outside lesson times.
VISITS: You are welcome to visit the school but please make an appointment beforehand.  Whenever you arrive at the school, always report to the office.
PARENTS EVENINGS: These are usually held twice a year.  An appointment is made at a convenient time for you to discuss your child with the Class Teacher and Teaching Assistants.
NEWSLETTERS: Newsletters are sent home twice per term.  These will include information on what the pupils have been doing and any up and coming events at the school.
There are also many other occasions over the year when parents are invited into school, for example, School Concerts, School Pantos, Sports Day etc. 

Dojo:Since September 2018 we have stopped using home / school books in favour of an online parent communication website called Class Dojo. This can be accessed via a smartphone, computer or internet ready device. We have had favourable reports from parents that the app, available for both Apple and android devices, makes the process of receiving and sending messages to staff and seeing photos and videos of their child’s time in school effortless and engaging.

REPORTING MEDICAL ABSENCES: If your child is unwell or attending a medical appointment, please inform the school as soon as possible by telephone or preferably in writing. Pupils should not be sent into school if they are unwell and not less than 24 hours after having sickness and diarrhoea.
HOLIDAYS DURING SCHOOL TIME: If you need to take your child with you on a family holiday or activity during school time please complete a Holiday Application Form available from the School Office and send it into school before the holiday otherwise we will have to record the absence as unauthorised. 
ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS: Radio alerts, text to parents/carers, school website and transport will notify parents/carers

The School has three minibuses and one people carrier.  Two of the minibuses have tail lifts.  All pupils are given the opportunity to participate in suitable educational visits.  Voluntary parental contributions may be asked for to subsidise such visits.  Residential visits are organised for older pupils.

Occupational Therapists are particularly interested in everyday activities in everyday activities that most of us take for granted most of the time:

  • Looking after yourself (self-care) 
  • Getting on with tasks at home, school or work (productive role) 
  • Enjoying your free time (leisure) 

People generally come into contact with an OT when their ability to engage in everyday activities is disrupted through ill health or disability.  Occupational Therapists understand that 'doing' is transormative; it is through everyday activities we all grow and change throughout our lives, develop meaning and purpose, a sense of identity and belonging in our communities. 

As a profession, we pride ourselves in being person-centred and understand that everyone has an inner drive to engage in activities that are uniquely meaniful to them.  We think about the whole person and how they interact with their environment to engage with the world. 

Practicing Occupational Therapists are allied health professionals and are registered with the Health and Social Care Professionals Council (HCPC)

Occupational Therapy at Three Ways Schoo

Children's Occupational Therapists use a developmental approach to work with children who have difficulties that hinder their ability to grow and learn and socialise and play.  They work in schools, hospitals, in the community, and with families in their homes, towards goals that are important to the family; both the child and the parents.  This might be: eating, sleeping, playing, learning, relating to others, or more complex activities for academic success. 

A child at Three Ways School may see different Children's Occupational Therapists for various reasons:

  • A Community Childrens OT for advice or small adaptaions for toileting, eating, sleep routines 
  • A Social Services OT for larger home adaptations 
  • A Sensory OT to understand any sensory processing difficulties a child has

All visitors are required to report to reception:

All visitors to the school will be asked to sign in at reception and receive a visitors badge.  Photographic ID is required such as a valid driving licence or passport. 

If you will be working within the school, you will also be asked to provide for evidence of your current address e.g. a utility bill.  If you are from an organisation which operates DBS checks (such as a school or the local authority) we will take a copy of your current DBS check but we cannot allow you unsupervised access to the school site. A member of staff will accompany you.

The Childrens Learning Disability Service

The Children’s Learning Disability Service is a team of Registered Learning Disability Nurses. We provide assessment, support, advice and training to children and young people up to the age of 19 who have moderate to severe learning disabilities and their parents and other carers, on a variety of physical, emotional and behavioural health issues. This can range from challenging behaviour to sleep problems to sexual health.

Speech and Language Therapy

Three Ways school is committed to providing an appropriate, responsive and multi modal communication environment for each pupil, in order to ensure curriculum access and enhance their learning potential.

The school has an integrated Speech and Language Therapy service, which works alongside teachers, teaching assistants, parents and a range of other professionals to support the communication, speech and language skills of pupils & students in every class. 

 

This is achieved through a wide range of means including:

• team working with teachers and classroom staff

• specific therapy groups

• individual therapy (usually alongside a member of the pupil’s class team)

• training

• advice to staff

• liaison with parents

• inter-disciplinary working with other therapists

• implementation of specialist strategies and methods across the school (as appropriate) that provide on-going communication support within classrooms (eg: Sherborne Developmental Movement, Canaan Barrie signing, Tac Pac ™, Sing and Swing, Three ways Music & Movement, Makaton™ Language Programme, Derbyshire Language Programme, PECS)

 

Three Ways school strives to be a total communication environment.  We use appropriate combinations of speech, Makaton™ signing, symbols, pictures, objects and sensory cues in order to increase pupils’ understanding and use of language.

 

Our Therapists also deliver a comprehensive service to pupils (and their families) who experience difficulties with eating, drinking and swallowing.

The Sensory Support Service provides support for children with hearing and/or vision needs from their earliest years and through their time at school.

The Service is managed by Bristol City Council's Children and Young People's Services and their expertise is available to families, children, schools and other professionals within the four Unitary Authorities.

SEN Specialist School Status

Since the amalgamation and move to our new school site in September 2007 the school has been working to develop learning opportunities to stimulate and develop the senses of pupils with specific or multi-sensory needs.  We have done a lot of fundraising to really develop our Sensory Studio, a state of the art computerised environment equipped with a wide range of visual, tactile, auditory, kinaesthetic and olfactory equipment and materials.  The Sensory Studio is an interactive environment that is constantly being developed with the advances of technology.

The school has appointed an interactive designer who works with staff to develop new learning opportunities and to provide specialist training. 

As more staff have become experienced and trained to use multi-sensory approaches to learning it has been found to be of immense benefit to the learning of many of our pupils with a range of learning difficulties and not just those with specific sensory needs. 

Multi-sensory stimulation is the foundation of early learning experiences relating teaching to meaningful sensory experiences which allows learning to be more active and consolidated.  As a result all staff have developed a way of integrating appropriate sensory experiences for all pupils into their teaching across the whole curriculum and across the school.

In September 2009 the school was awarded Specialist SEN School Status for Physical and Sensory Development.  Since gaining the status the school has really built on their areas of strength, improving standards within English, Mathematics and Personal Health and Social Education.  New approaches and resources are helping to develop teaching and learning that will enhance the whole school curriculum and raise standards of achievement of our pupils.

Specialist Status also involves the school working with the local community to support the development of facilities and opportunities for children with special needs.

 

What have we achieved since September 2009 and being awarded the status?

  • Appointment of an interactive designer for the Sensory Studio
  • Teacher and Higher Level Teaching Assistant working across the school as part of the Curriculum Access Team
  • Training and staff expertise developing
  • Increased opportunity in inclusive sports
  • Increased physical activity across the school for pupils and staff
  • Increased mobility for some pupils – following the MOVE programme
  • The purchase of new equipment and resources to enhance teaching and learning
  • Purchase of PE and Sensory integration equipment
  • Working with an Occupational Therapist to develop sensory integration
  • Develop our multi-sensory work through whole school training, new resources, increased learning access and opportunities and research opportunities
  • In the community we have developed links with a number of schools and different organisations.  We have provided support, shared training and outreach opportunities

The school has funded the ramp and disabled toilet facility at the Glasshouse Playing Field.  An excellent resource for not only Three Ways to access but also people in the community with mobility issues.

The Status is already having an impact on the improvement of standards and achievement across the school and within the community.

We have a lot of plans for the future development of the school using the additional funding provided by being awarded this Status.

Sensory Studio

The Sensory Studio is an incredibly versatile space that can be adapted to any area of the curriculum and provides a platform for immersive environments, informational scenarios, interactivity, multi-sensory stimuli, extra curricular clubs and special events.

The space makes use of three projectors to impose one super wide image, we have a bank of coloured LED lights, a special 12 speaker surround sound system, a moving spotlight and a variety of alternative control interfaces for use by students and staff.

With the school employing an 'Interaction Designer/Programmer' we are able to develop our own content and use sensors, cameras, microphones, tag readers and the iPad to trigger various lighting, video and sound events. In this way, students of any ability can gain control over their environment and teachers can wirelessly control a particular scenario.

Sessions make use of auditory, tactile, visual, taste and smell stimuli with integrated music therapy and aim to provide pupils with the opportunity to learn whilst working, exploring and experiencing independently.

School Trips

At Three Ways School our aim is to help pupils maximise their potential and have the skills they need to be fulfilled individuals. Much of this work is best done at school in our well designed classrooms and specialist rooms but sometimes this learning is best done out of school.

Our off-site trips include:

  • Going to shops to practice and develop maths, life skills and social skills
  • Going on geography, history and science field trips; including to Bath City Farm and local woodlands
  • Practicing independence skills by navigating in towns and the countryside using maps
  • Practicing independence skills by using public transport

Trips are flexible to meet the needs of individual children and there is a rigorous system in place to ensure they are safe and appropriate.

We now outsource our catering to a company based in Trowbridge. Eynon Catering come recommended by other local Special Schools. They have the knowledge and understanding of the need to provide not only a menu that adheres to all the School Food Standards but will provide all our special diets including being able to offer a special menu for blended food.

Sixth Form

The Sixth Form department at Three Ways offers students exciting opportunities to develop their academic and social skills as their move towards adulthood. Our curriculum therefore reflects the changes and transitions that young people begin to experience from 16 to 19 and beyond. Our curriculum is built around the functional skills in Literacy, Numeracy and Personal Social Health Education. The work of our students is accredited by the AQA Exam Board Unit Award Scheme. This offers differentiated opportunities based on the level the student is working at, allowing personalisation and creativity. Students continue to study a broad and balanced curriculum which also includes Drama/Music links with a local Secondary School, Water Mobility Sessions, Communication sessions and Music Therapy.

Some of our students may work within the department for up to three years, whilst we support others to access college after 1-2 years, depending on the transition plan. We support young people to visit a range of colleges and housing placements in order to inform their choice making. Young people engage in accessible work experience opportunities and receive support to set this up. Transition meetings ensure that students with a higher level of need continue to have regular support and any areas of development are pursued.

Key Stage 5 staff work within a multidisciplinary team including Learning Partnership West, therapy services and parents/carers in order to support our young people.

M&S ‘Your School Uniform’ will provide Three Ways School with the following:

  • A dedicated website containing pages specific to Three Ways.
  • A dedicated phone number enabling you to shop over the phone or answer any questions you may have.

Due to its personalised nature, M&S Your School Uniform operate separately from the main M&S therefore you will not be able to order in store. The School uniform service is direct delivery only. M&S School Uniform offer both Standard and express delivery to UK addresses. Standard delivery is £2.50 and Express £4.95. All orders of £35 and above receive free standard delivery and all returns are free, using the returns envelope that M&S provides.

Music Therapy

Music Therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals of all ages.  Music therapy improves the quality of life for persons who are well and meets the needs of children and adults with disabilities or illnesses.

Music therapy interventions can be designed to:
•promote wellness
•manage stress
•alleviate pain
•express feelings
•enhance memory
•improve communication
•promote physical rehabilitation.
Research in music therapy supports its effectiveness in a wide variety of healthcare and educational settings. (American Music Therapy Association)

Music Therapy belongs to The Arts Therapies, where music, art, drama and dance are not so much ‘taught’ as ‘lived’. A session is not a lesson … the client, whatever age they may be, will be encouraged to let go of the idea of a ‘right or wrong’ way to play, move or paint, and be given the freedom and encouragement to rely more on ‘instinct’ and ‘preference’. Within the safety and clear boundaries of the therapeutic environment, children and adults alike will often find a place where they are able to discover something of their ‘authentic’ selves in a way that words alone so often fail to do.
Music therapists work with a wide range of client groups including, and especially, children and young people with special, profound and complex needs, many of whom struggle with words or verbal material.

Music Therapy is:
•A way to express feelings without words
•A place and space to build a meaningful and supportive relationship
•An opportunity to play musical instruments that need no skill, and no previous experience of playing
•A place of ‘safety’ to be creative and spontaneous without criticism or any expectations.
•A place to discover more about ourselves and choose how we use that knowledge.
In a Music Therapy session, the therapist aims to match the person’s spontaneous sounds no matter how chaotic, uncertain or fragmented, and ‘contain’ them in an improvised musical framework. This ‘co-created’ music can then lead to spoken discussion, but may just as well become the process of communication, interaction and relationship building in itself.

Children's Rights and Advocacy Service

Sometimes young people face situations in their lives and they don't know who they can turn to.

Sometimes it can be hard to turn to those who know so much about you already.

Shout out! is an independant service run by Off the Record that helps young people to express their wishes and feelings, in whatever way that might be possible.  If there is something they want to say, or something they want to start, stop or change, then we can support them in doing that. 

We can't promise to make everything better in an instant but we can make sure that everything is tried and that the young person is listed to.

Shout Out! provides a drop-in service at Three Ways School that runs each week.  To see an Advocate, pupils can ask their teacher or put their name on a slip and put it in the Shout Out! box in reception.

Global Dimension at Three Ways    (Logo)

Three Ways School is committed to embedding an international dimension to learning across the school.

All students enjoy a range of cross - curricular, multi - sensory activities which enable them to access the world beyond their immediate and everyday experience.  Learners explore the tastes, smells, sights, sounds from other countries and expand their knowledge and understanding of other cultures and traditions through class discussions, group activities and research.

They learn that there are young people in other countries who have similar physical and intellectual challenges and discover ways to communicate with others despite barriers of distance and language.

Staff also value how the Global Dimension enriches learning in all areas of the curriculum.

Recent projects have included 2012 Paralympics collaboration with athletes at the Bath University Sports Village – whole school activities for Fair Trade Fortnight – Drama Workshops exploring Conflict Resolution and new e-mail links with a French School.

In Summer 2011, Sixth Form pupils had great fun creating a sustainable keyhole garden as part of an ongoing joint project with our link school in Uganda.

Over the year, School Council members worked alongside our Music Therapist to create a song and a DVD with our partners in Albania.

The spoken language cannot always be our primary method of communication. By developing a project around a song, we have found a way of taking two very contrasting cultures and sets of circumstances and linking them in a practical and meaningful way.

In September 2011 Three Ways School was accredited for Outstanding Development of the International Dimension in the Curriculum. We were praised for the scope of our ‘excellent international activities’ and our ‘support, commitment, creativity and innovative international work’.

About Three Ways School

Welcome to our website!

Three Ways School is an Academy Trust,  operating as a generic Community Special School.  It opened in September 2007 on our existing site, prior to 2007 there were three separate Special Schools in Bath that amalgamated in September 2005.

The school provides for 220 children with a wide range of Special Educational Needs.

Three Ways is divided into 3 departments to enable curriculum delivery and expectations that are age appropriate to all pupils.

          Primary Department - 4yrs-11yrs

          Secondary Department - 11yrs-16yrs

          Sixth Form - 16yrs-19yrs

The school is a Specialist School for Physical and Sensory.  It is also a School of Creativity.

We offer the full National Curriculum as a basis for curriculum development and add to this a wide range of additional activities for personal and social growth.

All pupils are encouraged and supported to access learning and achieve the highest possible standards.
